Low Perennials Under 12 inches

Aegopodium preview

Aegopodium

Bishop's goutweed, as it is commonly known, is a fast growing ground cover for all exposures. Its variegated foliage brightens up even dark areas under trees. Space plants 6 to 12 inches apart to form a ground cover growing up to 10 inches in height. White flowers appear in midsummer.

Ajuga preview

Ajuga

An excellent groundcover for all sun exposures. Creamy white and pink variegation make this plant striking through the season. Spikes of blue flowers appear in spring. Foliage colors intensify when given high light levels.

Armeria preview

Armeria

Also called Dwarf Sea Thrift. Armeria has tufts of grass-like foliage with globular bright pink flowers on 4-8" stems in late spring. Excellent for the front of a border in full to part sun. Shear off all old flowers when blooming is done.

Campanula preview

Tops in perennial border plants. When deadheaded, these cup shaped blue flowers last from June to fall. Plant in full to part sun in well drained soil. Grows 6 inches tall.

Snow in summer is an superb low growing border or rock garden plant. It is covered in white flowers in late spring to early summer. Use the silver foliage of this plant to accent other plants in the perennial garden. It has a spreading habit, growing only 3 to 6 inches. Cerastium prefers full sun locations.

Golden leaves have mauve flowers from May to September. Plant in full shade as the golden leaves burn in sun.

Pink flowers starting in June and continuing through the summer are set off by the silver green foliage of this ground cover. Lamium tolerates any sun exposure, although variegation is stronger in brighter conditions. Total height is 4 to 8 inches.

3 inch yellow flowers are produced early to late summer on this plant commonly called Ozark sundrops or evening primrose. The winged seed pods that develop after blooming are used in dried floral arrangements. Use in full sun to part sun edgings and rock gardens. It tolerates in hot dry conditions, perfect at the cottage when you are not always there to water.

Use this silver leaved wooly plant as a foliage accent in your perennial garden. Spikes of lavender flowers appear in May to June. The leaves are sometimes used in dried arrangements, as they can be formed around wreaths when the leaves are wilted, they then dry, keeping their form and silver color. Plant in full sun. Stachys reaches 10 to 12 inches.
